Benefits of Online Therapy

  1. Convenience: This is the biggest benefit for the clients I work with. They can have access their sessions from their home, work, or even their parked car. Many of my clients either work from home or have busy schedules that would not allow them to get to their session in time otherwise. Dallas highways and roads have been getting increasingly more congested with traffic. In addition traffic hours have been expanding making it difficult for people to get to their healthcare appointments. Often these appointments cut a big chunk out of the work day. This may be fine for a dentist appointment twice a year but when you are going to therapy weekly, that is a big time constraint when you also add in the unpredictable traffic.  Even the convenience of not having to dress up can be a benefit to clients.  Furthermore, my clients don’t feel like they need to “look” a certain way when coming into their sessions.  They can arrive in their favorite lounge outfit with no makeup or even with a bonnet on their head which may feel inappropriate to where at a typical office environment but totally acceptable for virtual sessions.

  2. Flexibility: Many of my clients do their research ahead of time to pick a clinician t that resonates with them the most and that they feel can help them. However, the “perfect therapist” for them may be in a different city. So, online counseling services allow clients to see clinicians that are not in their immediate geographical location. As a licensed therapist in Texas, I am able to see clients that live in Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and any other city in the state of Texas.

  3. Affordability: Though online therapy is often the same cost as in-person counseling services, clients often save money doing online sessions. Clients can save money indirectly on things like transportation and/or childcare.

  4. Therapeutic Advantages: Online therapy has been proven to be just as effective as in-person counseling. However, holding virtual sessions can provide some really helpful information that can guide my work as a clinician and can be used as a therapeutic advantage. I really enjoy online counseling because I get to know my clients even more through authentic observation that happens when clients are doing sessions from their home. Often I get to meet their children and their pets and I get to see their home. Furthermore, my clients tend to “let their hair down” so to speak easier when they are in a familiar environment such as their home. This information helps me understand, empathize, and aid my clients with everyday barriers that prevent them from living the life they want to live. In addition, when I meet couples for counseling in their living room, I often am right there at the “scene of the crime” (meaning the place where the argument may have happened in-between sessions). When this is the case, my clients can enact what happened and even change their interaction to be healthier and more productive. In turn, this can actually change the energy of the space that before had the type of tension that you could cut with a knife. I love when I am able to do this for a couple.
